Game 1 on Sunday afternoon between the second-seeded Grizzlies (-3.5) and seventh-seeded Lakers figures to be on the more closely-contested and heavily bet games of the weekend. 1. Anthony Davis, PF, Lakers – OVER 25.5 points
Davis is in line for a dominant series against a Grizzlies frontline missing Steven Adams (knee) and Brandon Clarke (Achilles’), which could lead to the big man eclipsing 26 points on Sunday. Davis has had his way as a scorer in two games against Memphis season, averaging 29 points per game on 55.6 percent shooting. With Memphis struggling on the glass since the All-Star break (24th in rebounding percentage), Davis likely scores a good chunk of his points via second-chance scoring opportunities. He’ll also likely attempt his fair share of free throws, with Los Angeles drawing the second-most fouls per game (21.5).
2. Dillon Brooks SG, Grizzlies – UNDER 13.5 points
While Brooks’ season-long scoring average of 14.3 points per game makes his OVER 13.5 point total appear feasible, but we think the Lakers’ sound defense limits his scoring output for a fourth time this season. In three games against L.A. this season, the ex-Oregon Duck’s averaged only 9.7 points per game on a horrid 24.4 percent shooting from the floor. Sure, the volume is there as Brooks has attempting 15 shots per game, but with Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Luke Kennard likely commanding more shots in a high-leverage game, look for Brooks to score fewer than 14 points.
3. Xavier Tillman, PF, Grizzlies – OVER 9.5 points
While we’re fading Brooks’ scoring ability, we’ll buy into Tillman scoring in double-figures on Sunday. With Tillman getting more run over the back half of the season, he’s been an underrated scoring option for Memphis. He’s likely to play close to 30 minutes on Sunday, giving him a real chance to score 10-plus points. Additionally, in the two games against the Lakers this season he’s suited up in, the big man’s pouring in 14.5 points per game on 13 field goal attempts. Expect a similar output now that his utilization rates have spiked.
4. Jaren Jackson Jr., C, Grizzlies – OVER 7.5 rebounds
We’ll finish our de facto “Same Game Parlay” with Jackson Jr.’s rebounding prop OVER. The Grizzlies man in the middle is averaging seven rebounds per game in three tilts against L.A. this season, but given he’s able to avoid foul trouble and potentially log 35-plus minutes, we think he grabs eight-plus boards on Sunday afternoon. Triple J’s found himself in foul trouble against the Lakers this year, picking up five fouls per game in each contest. We’re hoping he avoids picking up cheap fouls early in the game, allowing coach Taylor Jenkins to not have to worry about managing his minutes.
