World Cup matches, results yesterday
Yesterday saw one of the most drama-filled Round of 16 matches in World Cup history, as the USA were eliminated by Sweden on penalties.
Each side missed two penalties in the first five attempts, with Megan Rapinoe and Sophia Smith notably missing for the USA, before Lina Hurtig’s shot was almost saved by goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, but VAR ultimately ruled the ball crossed the line by mere millimeters, giving Sweden a famous win over a long time foe.
The first match of the day saw the Netherlands in an ultimately comfortable progression to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over South Africa. Banyana Banyana had multiple chances, but goals in either half to Jill Roord and Lineth Beerensteyn ultimately paved the way for the Dutch to set up a quarterfinal matchup with Spain.
