To say a lot happened in the first weekend of the 2023 NCAA Women’s Tournament would be an understatement.
No. 1 seeds Stanford and Indiana have been booted from the competition, losing to No. 8 Ole Miss and No. 9 Miami, respectively. This was the first time in a quarter-century that two top seeds have bowed out before the Sweet 16. The last time was in 1998, when the first 16-seed defeated a 1-seed, coincidentally also Stanford.
More drama awaits, with No. 2 Iowa as the only top-four team left in the Seattle 4 region and unexpected guests taking over the leaderboards. The men’s Sweet 16 might have more variety to the field, with teams never before seen still in the conversation, but the women are keeping pace with the narrative of utter madness.
The NCAA Women’s Tournament is down to 16 teams. Here’s how to watch the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight in 2023.
