England have edged ahead after a commanding performance at the end of Day 2 in the second Ashes Test against Australia.
The visitors, who began the day in a strong position, were bowled out quickly by England who managed to restrict their first innings score to 416, thanks to Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue, who picked three wickets each.
In reply, England got off to a great start with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett putting together a 91-run opening stand. They never looked back against a dull Aussie attack, with everybody getting starts with the exception of Joe Root.
Duckett just missed out on his century though. Despite losing him and Root quickly, England are in a very strong position, thanks to Ben Stokes and Harry Brook.

England vs Australia: The Ashes Second Test, Day 2 live updates
18:32- STUMPS, DAY 2. ENG 278/4 after 61 overs, trail AUS by 138 runs
England will be happy with their response here, but they surely know they lost three wickets needlessly after cruising at 188/1. Crawley and Duckett laid the perfect foundation and implemented the Bazball blueprint successfully. After Crawley’s departure, Pope and Duckett piled on more pressure and looked untouchable out there. However, once Pope was dismissed, Duckett and Root followed him soon, with the former missing out on his third Test century by just two runs. However, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes revived the innings and have put on 56 runs for the fifth wicket to set this Test up very nicely.
We’ll back for all the action on Day 3. Goodnight!
17:27- WICKET! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE JOE ROOT? He will be angry at himself after that shot. It’s the third consecutive wicket off a short ball and this time Mitchell Starc bangs one in short, at the body, and Root plays it frivolously. Smith, positioned at backward square, realised he had a lot of ground to cover. He makes a dive to complete a sensational catch and send Root back without making an impact.
17:08- WICKET! Heartbreak for Ben Duckett as he’s dismissed on 98!!! It’s the short ball from Hazlewood that once again does the trick and it’s another well-set England batsman who perishes. Duckett will rue it and he knew that the maiden Ashes hundred was there for the taking. England lose two wickets in quick succession and Australia have the momentum now.
16:50- WICKET! Ollie Pope departs. Green gets the breakthrough and the short ball ploy has worked! Pope shuffled across and hit the pull shot, only to find Steve Smith at deep backward square leg. He looked in great touch and will be disappointed to miss out on a fifty.
16:01- Session 3 commences. The players are back in the middle after the Tea Break.
15:41- End of Session 2. Tea Break commences. ENG 145/1 after 30 overs, trail AUS by 271 runs.
That was England’s session from start to end. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett added 91 runs for the opening wicket and got England off to the perfect start. Crawley was dismissed for 48 runs and was unlucky to miss out on a well-deserved 50. Then, Ollie Pope and Duckett added 54 runs in about 12 overs to keep the pressure on the Aussies. The game is poised very well as we head into the final session on Day 3. Stay tuned!
15:34- That’s fifty for Ben Duckett! He brings up his 6th half century in Tests and has played a crucial knock at the top of the innings.
14:48- WICKET! Australia get their breakthrough as Zak Crawley departs for 48. England are 91/1.
13:45- The second session commences
13:03- LUNCH! End of first session on Day 2 as England 13/0 after 4 overs. We will be back shortly with the second innings.
It has been an eventful session that saw Steve Smith completing his 32nd century but England managed to pick up the remaining five wickets.
12:42- England’s innings commence
12:32- WICKET! Australia bowled out for 416 as Ollie Robinson dismisses Josh Hazlewood for 4.
12:22- WICKET! Another one bites the dust! Nathan Lyon tries to pull Ollie Robinson’s delivery but Josh Tongue takes his catch.
12:06- WICKET! Steve Smith departs off Josh Tongue’s delivery for 110 runs as Ben Duckett takes his catch in the slip. A much-needed breakthrough for England.
11:47- CENTURY! 32nd Test hundred for Steve Smith. What a performer!
11:32- WICKET! Mitchell Starc dismissed by James Anderson as Bairstow takes his catch.
11:15- WICKET! Alex Carey departs for 22 after getting LBW off Stuart Broad’s delivery. Australia are 351/6
11:03- Action resumes on Day 2!
10:55- There is good news, the players are out on the pitch and day 2 is set to resume.
10:30- It’s drizzling out there but we hope that Day 2 starts on time.
10:00- Welcome to TSN’s coverage of the Ashes second Test. Australia dominated Day 1 as they managed to put up a total of 339 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Steve Smith is not out 85 while Alex Carey remained unbeaten at 11.

18:51- STUMPS, DAY 1. AUS 339-5 after 83 overs.
18:18- Wicket! One brings two for England as Root sends him back. Cameron Green departs for a duck and that’s a shocking shot so early in his innings.
18:16- Wicket! Joe Root dismisses Travis Head for 77 (73). Root has become England’s unlikely hero as he breaks the partnership between Head and Smith. A good innings that from Head but he’ll be disappointed not to have converted it into a big score.
17:46- Fifty for Travis Head. The left-handed batsman has looked in pristine touch and has given England an idea or two about how to employ the ‘Bazball’ strategy in the Ashes. He is looking in ominous form and England have no idea how to control the flow of runs, let alone take a wicket.
17:12- Fifty for Steve Smith. After failing in the first Test, Smith has made a good comeback and been his usual self in the second Ashes Test.
16:20- Session 3 commences
16:00- End of Session 2, Tea Break commences. AUS 190-2 after 50 overs
Australia completely dominated that session after losing David Warner. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have stitched a terrific stand so far, adding 94 runs for the 3rd wicket.
But England will be kicking themselves for not making the most of the overcast conditions and now they are facing the prospect of letting the Aussies post a daunting 1st innings.
