Few of us had the privilege of being taught by teachers who looked like us, but thankfully a pre-K student in Sugarland, Texas, isn’t one of them. In fact, August doesn’t just have a Black woman to instruct her in school, she has a Black female teacher who wore her exact hairstyle to show her just how beautiful she is.
Lakeview Elementary teacher Leigh Bishop shared the photo above on her Facebook page at the end of January, explaining how she’d told her student she liked her hair and even told her, “Don’t be mad at me when I come to school with my hair JUST like that tomorrow….”
August reportedly rolled her eyes and shrugged off the compliment but when she pulled up to school the next day to see Mrs. Bishop in her exact same hairstyle, both her and her dad’s jaws dropped. As the teacher explained in the comments section of the Facebook post that has now gone viral, “She was soooo tickled the whole afternoon!! It was the cutest thing.”
In another comment, Mrs. Bishop explained she’d only taken the picture to show her student what they looked like standing together, but seeing the response to the photo she now realizes the image “seriously speaks volumes!” Later, in responding to one of many compliments about what a great teacher she is, Mrs. Bishop explained, “Any chance I get to make a student feel whole & important, I TAKE IT!! (Plus I REALLY loved her hair 🙂 ).”
