The fifth and final Test of Ashes 2023 is upon us as England will aim to prevent Australia from winning the series at their home for the first time since 2001.
Australia have already retained the Ashes urn after the fourth Test got washed due to rain in Manchester. They will now want to end the series on a high.

A manic first-innings from England comes to a close, with the scorecard reading 283. It feels like a decent effort, considering they were 212/7 at one point. However, Australia have only themselves to blame for the catches they put down, including that of Brook (85) when he had just walked in. If they had caught well, Australia would’ve restricted England below 200, one feels.
Over to the Aussie batsmen now.
16:28 – ALL OUT! England 283 (54.4 overs)
That’s it. Chris Woakes falls after a very handy 36 that has propelled England to a decent first-innings score. He top-edged a short ball from Starc straight to fine leg to give the left-armer his fourth wicket.
16:17 – WICKET! England 270/9 (52.5 overs)
Stuart Broad (7) doesn’t last long out there. The left-hander back away and swings hard at a Mitchell Starc delivery outside off. All he manages to do is to sky it to cover where Head held on to a tricky catch. Starc gets his third wicket.
16:10 – WOOD TAKEN OUT! England 261/8 (51.3 overs)
Australia have finally managed to break that annoying little partnership. Todd Murphy, after being hit for a four, bravely flights one up to Wood (28) who goes for an almighty slog only to misjudge the flight and loses the top of his off-stump. England eight down.
15:40- England reach 250! With that, it is time for tea.
15:17- WICKET! England are falling apart at The Oval as Brook departs for a brilliant innings of 85 off 91 balls. England are 212/7. Mark Wood comes in the middle.
15:33- WICKET! Bairstow castled by Hazlewood! He departs for four as England stumble again at 208/6. Chris Woakes is the new batsman on the crease.
14:57- 200 comes up for England in the 41st over! Although Australia have got wickets intermittently they have failed to stem the flow of runs.
14:15- WICKET! Starc gets through Stokes’ defence and his off-stump goes for a walk. He goes for a meagre 3 as England are 195/5. Jonny Bairstow is the new man in.
14:35- WICKET! Australia get the breakthrough as Moeen Ali departs for 34 after getting castled by Todd Murphy.
Ben Stokes comes out to bat as England are 184/4.
14:15- The two batsmen are scoring at a brisk pace and the 150 comes up for England in the 31st over.
14:05- Harry Brook reaches his 50 in just 44 balls. Bazzball is well and truly on at The Oval.
13:45- Play resumes after lunch as Brook and Ali walk into the middle.
13:05- LUNCH! England are 131/3 after the first session.
The English openers gave the team a strong start but three wickets in quick succession brought Australia right back in the game.
12:16 pm- WICKET! Another one bites the dust and this time it’s Joe Root who gets bowled by Josh Hazlewood for just runs. Aussie bowlers are on fire at the moment!
12:03 pm- WICKET! England lose another one! Zak Crawley departs for 22 after edging Pat Cummins’ delivery straight to Steve Smith in the second slip. Australia are back in the game.
12:00 pm- WICKET! Ben Duckett departs for 41 after a great start as he nicks Mitchell Marsh’s delivery to Alex Carry.
11:00 am- Day 1 of the fifth Test commences.

Toss Update: Australia to bowl first
Pat Cummins has won the toss and has decided to put England into bat at Kennington.
“Bit of cloud overhead, the wicket looks like a good wicket,” says Cummins.

Cummins confirmed that Todd Murphy replaces Cameron Green in the starting XI primarily due to the fact that Nathan Lyon has been successful in the Kennington Oval in the past.
